The Backpacker & the Unexpected Power of Purple

The Backpacker & the Unexpected Power of Purple

In 2022, I painted one of many personal murals in the old factory. This place has been great to explore new ideas and styles. The subject was one that keeps showing up in my work: a lone backpacker. But this time, something was different.

Before I started, I asked my Instagram followers to vote on the color palette. The winning combo? Pink and purple. Not exactly my comfort zone at the time. I’d never really used those tones seriously in my murals before — and honestly, I wasn’t sure I’d like the result.

But I went with it.

And by the time I stepped back from the finished wall, something clicked. The way the purple worked with the light pink and the white brick wall surprised me. It gave the whole piece a sense of dreaminess and depth I hadn’t expected. That moment changed the way I saw colour.

Since then, purple’s become one of my go-to tones. It’s wild how one experiment — driven by a vote from my community — reshaped my visual language.

Moral of the story: you just never know until you try.
